Do you need it or do you want it?

When I was a baby Christian, one of the things I heard and didn’t really like was to be told “is your petition to God something you need or something you want‘? I don’t know about you but if you are really honest about this, sometimes we just want things that we don’t necessarily need. Things like a birthday cake, a beautiful garden, a microwave…

These things are not sinful at all and yet, according to the religious minds, we shouldn’t be asking God for things like these because we don’t NEED them, we just WANT them…

The Bible tells us that God loves us so much that He knows the number of hairs we have on our heads. Think about it, it is really that important the number of hair we have? What difference does it make to our lives the number of hair we have… But if God is interested in such a small detail about us, why wouldn’t he care about what we want and only care about what we need?

Jesus first miracle was turning water to wine at the wedding at Cana. We are told that they had wine at first but ran out of it. When Jesus turned water to wine, it wasn’t any wine but the best!!! So much that the guests complimented the host for serving best wine until the end of the party unlike what other people do.

Question: Was it a matter of death or life? Did they need that wine? A firkin equaled about 9 gallons. So, each water pot held 18 to 27 gallons, and all six water pots held 108 to 162 gallons. The Lord supplied more wine than they could ever use at this feast. This illustrates that He doesn’t just barely meet our needs. He is the God of abundance. Jesus knew they didn’t need that much wine and yet he provided. Do you know why? Because if it matters to you then it matters to God!

So go ahead, ask for what you want!

Jesus not only turned the water into wine, but He made good wine. It was better than normal. Some people would want us to believe this was non-fermented wine in an effort to say Jesus would never have produced something that could lead someone to drunkenness. But this statement by the governor of the feast “A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!” (John 2:10 NLT),  implies they were drinking fermented wine that impaired their senses after having a few drinks. This tasted like good fermented wine to him. Drinking wine is not forbidden in Scripture. Drunkenness is what’s rebuked in Scripture (Proverbs 23:29-35).

The Bible says, if we, as evil as we are, know how to give good gifts to our children, how much more will our heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him? (Matthew 7:11 NLT). We don’t just give our children what they need, some times, with wisdom, we also give them what they want because they have asked for it and it brings us great joy to please them. We cannot beat God on this one. God takes pleasure in the prosperity of his servants, how much more of his own children?
